It’s just on wind up so it begins to fall apart, nevertheless smack-up finale rescues they about ‘red’. Admirably staged and you may wisely dialogued, it will have zero higher issue in life style down the very unappealing name.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Movie Bulletin told you “The film movements within an easy pace, the newest conversation is actually slick and you will characterisations fundamentally active. Penis Powell and you can Evelyn Keyes head this new cast skillfully, as detective was used considerable aplomb because of the that individual identification, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody on The fresh Yorker noted “So it terse and you can tight movie noir was predicated on new intimate and you can elite group problems of your own label reputation, new unlawful genius (starred by the Knob Powell) trailing an elegant unlawful gambling enterprise. This new film’s blogger and manager, Robert Rossen, sets up an effective multidimensional chess games, for mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sister (Nina Foch) has worked in the gambling enterprise and you can dated a corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic program, the fresh cast’s suavely controlled body language off love and menace, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will smartly assertive pictures (in addition to his political conscience) get this pugnacious yet in depth spectacle a low profile vintage of the genre.” [ ten ]

Cobb, as the a police inspector, and up the score . Even though the patch employs a familiar development, brand new characterizations are fresh therefore the activities adequate so you can overbalance. Dialogue is terse and you will relevant, avoiding the psychological, phoney reach. Uncommon cam bases appear now and then so you’re able to intensify appeal and you will temporarily arrest the eye. Its mainly a question of watching Mr. Powell go through their paces fashionably when you are a massive throw off actors and you can performers promote your standard support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the great little woman which brings forth brand new finest in your and Ellen Drew ‘s the sleek and slinky vixen which gets him towards jams. Thomas Gomez is greasy due to the fact villain and Lee J. Cobb really does a separate able journey once the a weary police inspector whom in the end shuts your situation. A lot of taking and you can smoking is accomplished because of the all concerned.” [ 12 ]
